Top Ten Tuesday #4 | Favourite Webtoons

WEBTOONS : an animated cartoon or series of comic strips published online.

I’ve been literally dying to post this. So for those who don’t know what webtoons are, they’re cartoons on the internet (Web-toons get it?). So it’s a platform with many series to read, and the authors update every week and sometimes more. The topics range from slice of life to horror and more. Honestly, I fell in love with reading webtoons last year during exam season (Thanks, Karina) and I’ve been reading them since. They’re super low maintenance and little commitment which is why they’re perfect for me. But enough ranting, here are 10 of my favorites.

10. Refund High School by LICO

Fantasy/drama. This is high school after death, where you can gain karma points to reincarnate with a better life. It’s told in a series of short snippets; there’s a general plotline, but it’s not the major focus.

9. Unloveable Replacement by Nylana

When his relationship went down the drain, Chiko Dyer started to develop a weird relationship with a local delivery girl. Awesome drawing skills that looks a lot like manga. Unfortunately, this one only updates once a month, and the author is pretty busy, so the plot hasn’t really picked up much pace. THough I wanted to give it a shoutout since it is on Discover.

8. Age Matters by Enjelicious

A 29 year old hopeless romantic wonders if her time has come and gone, until she meets a 23 year old, billionaire bachelor with a secret. In love, does age really matter?

It’s not as cliche as it sounds. Rose is a very independent woman with her own sense of sass and humor. What I love about this one is that although it takes on a cliche, the story has a really authentic storyline. There’s no love at first sight, or any of that.

7. My Giant Nerd Boyfriend by Fishtail

This is a slice of life comic about a short graphic artist who has a really tall boyfriend. The style is simplistic, albeit messier, and the stories are short, something you can look through in a brief three seconds. It’s absolutely hilarious and updates three times a week.

6. A Good Day to be a Dog by Lee Hey

A life/romance story about a girl who has a curse that turns her into a dog at night. In order to lift the curse, she has to kiss her colleague. The thing is, he’s afraid of dogs. This webtoon has really long episodes (which I am forever grateful for). I also really like the art in this one.

5. Lore Olympus by Rachel Smyth

A modern retelling of Persephone and Hades. I’m a hopeless romantic, so I’d rather believe that the Goddess Persephone had fallen in love rather than being kidnapped. The art is really unique in this one, especially the play of color. It’s bright and vivid coloring really draws readers it.

4. True Beauty by Yaongyi

So this is about a girl who is beautiful with makeup, ugly without it. The art is absolutely beautiful. I’ll have to say, out of all these webtoons, I love this style the most. It’s also a nice spin of the overused trope pretty girl with an ugly disguise, so I applaud the writer to taking this decision. Also the plot is hilarious. I love the contrast between with/without makeup and I think it speaks the truth to the idea of beauty.

3. Cheese in the Trap by Soonkki

This was my very first webtoons, which is why it still holds a special place in my list. It takes place in college and follows our main character Hong Seol as she navigates through college trying to avoid conflict and her enigmatic classmate Yoo Jung who tries to befriend her. I really liked this webtoon since I found myself relating to Hong-Seol in how she overthinks everything. It’s super long (I dedicated a whole exam week to read through 200 episodes) and still not done translating. Hopefully, during senioritis, I’ll be able to reread it again.

2. I Love Yoo by Quimchee

This is another drama/romance one. We follow Yoo Shin-Ae as she traverses through her last years in high school while dealing with two very disparate brothers. I was first discouraged by rich boy-poor girl plotline, but I’m really happy I picked it up. Because Shina-Ae is super bad-ass and independent. There are quite a few hilarious scenes, which allows some comedic relief during the drama-filled episodes.

1. Murrz by Murrz

It’s another slice of life comic and one that’s left me breathless from laughing way too much. It follows Murrz with her boyfriend Boobz and cats Doobz and Beanz and talks about their everyday life things. Yep, I love the names too. I think its just personally my type of crude humor, so that might be why I love it so much. I also love the simplistic and neat style that the author has. It’s also a plus that the webtoon updates 3 times a week.

Webtoons have unfortunately become an integral part of my life. It’s what makes me anticipate Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Although it’s low commitment, I’ve become highly committed to staying up to date 😛

So do you guys read Webtoons? What are your favorites? Which ones are you interested in?

  1. Lovely list! I don’t read a lot of webtoons, I kind of just binge read them once and then forget to check back for more. I want to get into reading them regularly though, so this list is a great place to start! Lore Olympus sounds wonderful, I love Hades and Persephone retellings too. Especially romantic ones! ❤️

    1. Thanks! I used to not read them because I hated waiting, but they eventually became something I looked forward to each week 🙂 I’m glad you’ve read webtoons before, I was worried I was the only one 😛

  2. I’d never heard of webtoons before; I think I’ll be looking up some of these! I like the sound of Age Matters. Usually, the cliche is the older, rich man, so having a more experienced woman is certainly different!
And I too prefer to think that Persephone fell in love with Hades. It was just her miserable mother who made her come back for half the year 😂
